For over 47 years, Bluegrass Roots was in newsletter format. In the early years, an issue would be on typewritten pages, stapled together, and gleefully mailed to waiting hands.

At that time, online services did not exist so Bluegrass Roots was a treasure trove of contents. These earlier editions contained vital records, cemetery records, and genealogical techniques. News from other societies was also commonly available.

With the exception of the first year and 2010, nearly all editions were published quarterly and available for download.
